Mrugagad incident 2016

Yesterday, there was a bad incident happened at Mrugagad near to khopoli. A group of 4 trekkers were doing the trekking at Mrugagad and while at the last stage, one girl slipped from the top and almost fell down 30/40 feet due to non proper grip shoes.

Luckily myself with other group were also doing the trekking on the same fort. When the incident happened we were just few minutes away from them. As soon as we reached the spot, myself and other friends shocked to see that injured girl is our trekmate. She was having major head injury as she fell down on the rocks.

Her other friends were already in big shock due to the incident but as soon as they saw us, they got the big relief as we are common trek mates.
We immediately saw her injury condition and given the first aid treatment. Also tried to cool down the situation and given her mental support.

Here, our trekking experience helped in rescue condition. We planned and executed the next course of action to get immediate hospital treatment in short time.

1. One of them immediately get down and came back after 45 min/1hour with 8/10 villagers with the equipments to get her down.
2. Due to weak mobile network, after several attempts we successfully connected to 108 and arranged the ambulance. The government ambulance came on sharp time at the base village with the assistant doctor. The ambulance team also came with the strecher and climbed the fort till the middle.
3. In parallel, I also tried to reach out to Shivdurga mountaineering rescue team ( Rohit Vartak ) to get all possible help from them. I was able to connect him once but it was not audiable to him.

Till we get the help from the villagers , we took her down through rocky patch till the middle. With the help of villagers and the ambulence team, we admitted her at khopoli hospital within 3 hours after the incident. Now, she is out of danger and admitted in hospital at pune.

Very much thankful to my friends Jyoti Karande, Bramhanand Pujari , sachin shelke, pranav patil and Richard Sir who immediately helped to save injured trekmate from life threatening condition.

Thanks to Dr.Rahul Jirwankar and his ambulance team for their quick response
( 108 - Pali division ). They have shown that government team can also give the best service.

Thanks to the villagers of Bheliv, who helped on time.

Lessons learned from this incident for all trekkers. Their are many suggestions, so would like to highlight major one.

1. Wear proper grip trek shoes. Action trekking shoe is the best.
2. Wear trek helmet in difficult rocky/slippery patch. Rest of the time keep in the bag.
3. Avoid Selfie/photography in difficult patches.
4. Do the trekking atleast in the group of 7/8 ppl with all safety instruments.
5. Take the local guide in case of no idea of fort/range routes. Also take the contact numbers of local villagers before the trek.
6. Trekking is not a picnic or hill marathon. So do it slowly and carefully.

Emergency numbers for rescue operation -
1. 108 - Emegency no. for ambulence/police/fire brigade.
2. Rohit Vartak ( Shivdurg Rescue Team ) -
+918983578221
3. Onkar Oak - ( Experienced Trekker ) +919922452931
